Mr. Coleman's and Mrs. Kahkonen's 2nd Grade Classrooms
Hi there! We are part of a rural school in Holden, Maine. There are 21 students in Mr. Coleman's classroom and 20 students in Mrs. Kahkonen's classroom. We are located just 15 minutes outside of Bangor and our school is on the popular tourist route heading towards Bar Harbor. We are in a Kindergarten through 4th grade school and have approximately 175 students. When our students leave our school, they go to the Holbrook Middle School until 8th grade.
Here in Maine, most people celebrate a traditional Christmas. Most homes have a Christmas tree, Christmas Wreath, and most students celebrate Christmas by opening there presents with their families on Christmas Day. There are some families scattered throughout our State that are from a variety of other religious backgrounds. Our school population primarily celebrates a traditional Christmas. However, in our public schools, we try not to bring the religious aspect into Christmas (although many families here have some form of religion or religious beliefs). We don't bring in religion due to our nation's laws (separation of church and state).
Some of our favorite Christmas shows are Rudolph, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, The Grinch, and Charlie Brown Christmas!
We sing the traditional Christmas songs like: Deck the Halls, Up on the Roof Top, Rudolph, Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, etc.
Many students have Christmas Stockings and their family traditions vary. Many families go to church on Christmas or Christmas Eve. Many families travel to family members houses for their celebrations too. Most, if not all of the students in our 2nd grades, celebrate Santa Claus coming to town to deliver them presents!
